This stuff is the best. . .well, it is the best if you like oatmeal and yogurt. I have been making this in big batches and then keeping it in the fridge to eat for several days in a row. I'm obsessed with it right now. I first had Swiss Oatmeal (I think another name for it is Cold Oatmeal or Summer Oatmeal) years ago at Corner Bakery and then a friend of mine gave me a simple recipe for it. I toyed around with that recipe and some other recipes from online to get a flavor and consistency that I liked. You can totally doctor this up any way you like to meet your tastes. Enjoy!
Swiss Oatmeal
Ingredients:
-1 1/2c Water
-3/4 c Old Fashioned Oats
-3/4c Whole Milk
-3/4c Whole Milk Vanilla Yogurt
-1 tsp cinnamon
-1/4 c banana
-1/4 c dried cranberries
-1/4 c granny smith apples peeled and chopped
Directions:
Cook the oats in boiling water for about 8 minutes. Allow to cool for about 5-10 minutes but not too long or it will be too difficult to stir in the other ingredients (you can also soak your oats beforehand to get more nutrition out of them). Add the milk, yogurt and cinnamon. Stir until combined. Refrigerate overnight so the oats can absorb the other liquids. The next day stir in the fruits and enjoy! You want to wait until you are ready to eat the oatmeal to add the fruits so that they stay fresh. No one likes a slimy banana or a mushy apple. :)
*You could stir in raisins, almonds, walnuts, etc according to what you like. You could also use low fat milk and yogurt. We just like to eat full-fat dairy products in our home. If you want to know why you can check out this.
Hi Jess! I bookmarked your blog awhile back and check it now and then. I'll have to try this recipe. I noticed your link was to the WAPF site. Do you incorporate a lot of their principles into your cooking/eating? I have learned so much from WAPF and eating according to their standards has helped our family in so many ways. We have a Weston Price mommies group here...so fun and helpful!
ReplyDeleteHI Bethany! Do you guys have a blog too? I do try to incorporate many of the WAPF principles into our cooking and eating. I really wish I did more. I soak my grains, eat full-fat dairy products, cook with butter, eat real, unprocessed foods, and drink lacto-fermented beverages & filtered water. I am saving carcasses to make my own stocks as well. :) I think it'd be so cool to have a WAP mommy group. If you have good recipes I'd love to have them! Also, where do you buy your cod liver oil?
ReplyDeleteI just found your cool blog! This recipe reminded me I left a bowl of Trader Joe's Steel Cut Oatmeal in the microwave. I'm going to see how long it takes for the magic of social media to show this post to my wife, so she can take it out. I give it 20-40 minutes.
ReplyDeleteI just read about your move! That is crazy!! No, no blog. I used to but don't update it anymore.
ReplyDeleteIn my humble opinion, Green Pastures is the best CLO. I buy the fermented kind in oslo orange. Everett even takes it (much better than Jason!) I usually buy it from Radiant Life. It is pricey, but worth it. You have to be careful because so many brands don't have the real stuff in it, which can be dangerous. I don't take much of it in the summer, so that saves some $$.
Do you have the Nourishing Traditions cookbook yet? I am always trying new things out of there. It is so much fun!
